This course is divided into three presentations:

1)”The Bing Era” covers the presenter’s training and performing experience in dance, including an anecdotal account of the role of dance in opera based on Rudolf Bing’s administration as General Manager of the Metropolitan Opera in NYC (1950-1972). The reforms and revitalization of the ballet in opera under Bing’s guidance were a major factor in his success;

2) “How to Look at Ballet” is a slide presentation covering the origin and development of ballet – its sociological background, academic formalism and life style, from the 16th – 21st centuries. Also discussed – the role of the viewer as it has changed with time;

3) “How to Look at Modern Dance” examines the genre as the antithesis of Ballet, but at the same time its “other half’. Beginning with Isadora Duncan through its American expression, Modern Dance is a “state of mind” – expressionist, romantic and avant garde.

Malcolm McCormick has a quarter century of performing and training experience. He has also been involved in design aspects of dance production and has given many lectures. He is co-author of No Fixed Points: Dance in the Twentieth Century (Yale University Press).
