The Tempest is already a phantasmagoria which seems to provoke directors to wild and wonderful interpretations (sci-fi, western, feminist). We will discuss Shakespeare’s play in the first class and then screen five film versions including those by Peter Greenaway and Derek Jarman and featuring such stars as Helen Mirren, Sir John Gielgud (nude at age 86 – don’t be afraid), Leslie Nielsen and Robbie the Robot.
Mark Coleman taught Shakespeare for a couple of decades at SUNY Potsdam. He made extensive use of films in his classes. He has taught SOAR classes on filmed versions of Henry V, Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet.
NOTES: 1) Please re-read Shakespeare’s play “The Tempest” before coming to the first class; 2) The class is scheduled for 2½ hours to accommodate the longest film; the rest of the films (hence classes) are substantially shorter.
