This presentation will focus on the adventure of managing North Country Grown Cooperative, Inc. (NCGC), a farmer-owned cooperative based in St. Lawrence County. The challenges of wild weather, short growing season, lack of local infrastructure, and turning numerous small growers used to selling at farmer’s markets into a team of educated growers capable of selling commercially are just some of the obstacles encountered. NCGC is still here after almost 10 years and it has been an interesting experience.
Sue Rau has been the manager of North Country Grown Cooperative, Inc. since its incorporation in 2005. She and her husband, Andy Soutar, run Drumlins End Farms in Norfolk, NY. The farm has been certified organic since the late 1980’s.
