This presentation is based on the presenter’s fieldwork in three villages in China as the villagers explore ways to balance economic prosperity and social solidarity. The presenter will discuss local institutional innovations that provide the peasants with a safety net in an increasingly industrialized and marketized society. Ultimately, the three cases provide examples to help us reconsider the relationship between market, state, and society.
