This course will present the First World War – or “The Great War,” as it was then called – from the home front and the trenches as experienced by European and American poets including, among others, Thomas Hardy, Charles Hamilton Sorley, Wilfred Owen, Siegfried Sassoon, Alan Seeger, and Carl Sandburg. Selected passages from war participants’ memoirs and fiction will also be presented and discussed.

Doug Rose taught War and Literature at SUNY Canton for over 20 years before retiring in 2005. He continues to research 20th century wars and has written a series of poems about World War II.
